why cant i get this to work..thanks

C++ array?
You are expecting users to enter NUMERIC representation of the months. The wording of the months is NEVER used. So, numberMonths array definition is not needed.

Define numberMonths as an INTEGER.

Look what exactly you are doing with the numberMonth variable! It's an index for an array. Yet, you defined it as string.
Reply:try to chaneg this line

string flowerOfmonth [12]={" "};

to

string flowerOfmonth [12];

OR

initialize the second array as you have done with the first one

string flowerOfmonth = {"Carnation", "Violet", "Daffodile", ... }

Irises and daffodils -- when can I transplant them?

We are moving sometime this summer (June or July, I would guess) from Indiana to North Carolina. I have lots and lots of bearded and dwarf irises that have been in the ground for 2-3 years and do quite well here.

When can I safely dig them up to take with us? Is it OK for them to dry out (i.e. can I dig them up right away after they bloom?) or should they be the last thing I get before we drive away? Should I pack them in paper bags?

And all of the above questions for daffodils and narcissus, too...

Thanks so much!

Irises and daffodils -- when can I transplant them?
Putting them in pots is the best thing to do. If you can't do that then wait and dig them up at the last minute and keep the roots and bulbs moist until you can get them in the ground again. Hopefully that will only be a few days to a week.

They will probably do okay out of the ground for a longer period but I wouldn't take the chance. Bearded irises are just to special to take a chance.

Daffodils are can be treated the same way but they aren't as special as irises.
Reply:Dig them all up in late summer. Put the bulbs in onion bags so they can dry out. Cut the foliage of the irises back to about three or four inches ( they'll look like little fans). Replant the irises within several days, leaving the top part of the root exposed. Replant the other bulbs in the fall.
Reply:Unfortunately they need their green leaves to provide food for next years blooms. Is it at all possible to plant them in containers to take with you? I have several friends who have done this and the plants survived. We moved mock orange shrubs this way and they all did well.

What do you think of my haikus?
Isn't it supposed to be 5 syllables, 7 syllables, then 5 syllables? But otherwise, they're really good. I liked 3, 5, and 8 - very good. 6 wasn't so great because you began mentioning the things that a home is good for (sleep, warmth) and then you sort of .. just .. stop and say it's a cage. The rest are also good but these caught my attention
Reply:The last and the 4th to last are my favorites.

I don't like the 2nd and the 4th.

Hope that help. It probably won't As long as YOU'RE happy with your poems, then they're good. Oneself is always the harshest critic.

FANCIES

SURELY the flowers of a hundred springs

Are simply the souls of beautiful things!

The poppies aflame with gold and red

Were the kisses of lovers in days that are fled.

The purple pansies with dew-drops pearled

Were the rainbow dreams of a youngling world.

The lily, white as a star apart,

Was the first pure prayer of a virgin heart.

The daisies that dance and twinkle so

Were the laughter of children in long ago.

The sweetness of all true friendship yet

Lives in the breath of the mignonette.

To the white narcissus there must belong

The very delight of a maiden's song.

And the rose, all flowers of the earth above,

Was a perfect, rapturous thought of love.

Oh! surely the blossoms of all the springs

Must be the souls of beautiful things.

I would think each of these is a metaphor.

Words in English that relate to Greek Gods and Goddesses?
Sorry, I dont give homework answers, not fair to you nor your teacher.

I will however suggest that you do some quick research ...

Goggle the key words:

mythological vocabulary
Reply:Cronos is Father Time, Gaia is Mother Earth, Pandora rquivalent is Garden Of Eden, Ares is War, Wisdom for Athena, Conceited for Narcissus, Hell Hound for Cerberus, Messenger for Hermes, Love for Aphrodite, Hell for Hades, Repeat for Echo, Puch equiv for Pan or close enough, God is Zeus, Demeter Earth Goddess, about all can say if you are sincere here it is.
Reply:cronos father of disasterus titans giants and all these. father of zeus. father of time

rhea mother of the above. saviour of zeus

zeus father of all gods. master of them. ruler of the cosmos.

hera wife of zeus. god patron of the family

athena symbol of wisdom

poseidon god of the sea

hades lord of the under-world

demeter goddess of agriculture and staff

persephone daughter of demeter, stolen by hades. she was cursed to live six months with her mother with the living (symbol of spring and summer) and six months with hades with the dead ( symbol of fall and winter)

pan half human half goatprotects the arts

pandora person given the famous pandoras box and told not to open.she opened it all bad things came out and only hope stays in the box

hermes messenger of the gods protects the merchants

gaia mother earth

cerberus hell hound guardian of the underworld

narcissus a beautiful boy that fell in love with his reflection
Reply:Well you really shouldn't have procrastinated. Why are people so lazy these days?

You can't rely on other people for work that you should have done...
Reply:I don't think the people above read you question!

Here are a couple :

Echo is the source of the word echo.

Our word panic comes from Pan.

Narcissus gave his name to the flower narcissus, another word for daffodil.

For the rest you will need to be more creative. Like phrases "Pandora's box" which are used in English, or "Athens", the city named after the goddess.

Do your own homework. Research them. Google them, you'll find out tons of stuff. Do Yahoo Search not Yahoo answers!!
Reply:okay well go to ask.com. it works good. just type in like the name of the people and then type in your question. then it will give you the answer there. just look you'll find it.
Reply:They are right, you need to do your own homework.

Go to google.com and type in "Pegasus" then just try clicking some of the links that show up and read what the pages say. You'll find your answers.

Try Wikipedia.
Reply:I don't mean to sound like a teacher (as I'm only almost thirteen), but you won't learn anything unless you do the work yourself. Try this, it makes learning a little bit more fun:

Not that long, I planted some just after Thanksgiving and they were blooming by Christmas. Only 3-4 wks, they grow pretty fast. So, you are not wrong. Maybe 4 or 5 days to start growing, but it doesn't take long. Keep them in a sunny spot.
Reply:About 8 weeks from beginning to bloom.

Seriously, it took like 3 minutes to look up this on the internet. and answer your question..I typed in the names in a search engine and chose the one that did not say "flower" and then "Pygmalion prayed to" and found it was Venus without even opening a single web-page. Tarantula names?

I'm having trouble thinking of a name for a tarantula. I don't have one yet, but I think I will soon, and I want to think of a name before I get it. I'm planning on getting a Mexican Bloodleg, Female ; http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/9791/...

Perhaps a male? Probably not. They live too short :( But give me names anyways, cause I don't guarantee getting a female.

Thanks.

I was thinking of Aphrodite or Venus if I get a female. Heracles or more likely Narcissus (Referring to the myth, not the flower) if male. A trans-gender name? Narcissist probably.

What do you think? Any good? Suggestions? Thanks.

Tarantula names?
My spider is named Bitsy, she is a Chilean Rose Tarantula. I decided to name her something nonthreatening. She is obviously names after the song "Itsy Bitsy Spider" No one hates that song, so I felt her name would remind people that not all spiders are scary.

I like Venus, it sounds mythical and graceful(which is what spiders, especially the tarantulas resonate in their presents.

A female is defiantly a good choice, but be sure you get it from a breeder since the ones in stores are usually male(since they are cheaper).

This is a place that ships them, it is worth the extra $50 for a female from a place that knows what they are doing.

The Mexican Blood legs are really pretty. My favorite is the Cobolt Blue.
Reply:Girl names-Stella,Thora,Frita.

Boy names-Rico,Reggie,Fint.
Reply:Fuzznutts (male). Fuzzbugg (female).
Reply:vigilia d'Ognissanti (Italian)

dia das bruxas (Portuguese)

these names were translated from english to the language in parentheses.

the word I translated was Halloween. I chose that because of his orange and black coloring.

I figure you can use the whole name and part of it as a nick name.

I need help with an origin myth!!!!!!?

I need to write an origin myth, like one of those greek mythology things that tells how something came to be. I was thinking of doing like..how the zebra got it's stripes or something. We can either use greek/roman gods or make up our own characters. The examples we read in class were echo and the narcissus flower, which told how echos and daffidils came to be. We also read one about how shadows came to be. Any ideas would be great! I have to write a five paragraph essay, but just a good idea to start off would be amazing. (=

I need help with an origin myth!!!!!!?
Pandora's Box - good story

Many American Indian beliefs are based on characters represented by animals. The earth being a turtle for example.
Reply:Stick with your original idea about the zebras. It sounds really interesting. Do you know if there are any African myths about this already? Try going online and seeing what there is out there already and then making it your own.

Keep up the good work.

Also let me say that it is refreshing to find someone that is asking for help, not for someone to do the work for them.
Reply:How about why it storms/rains?? Like for storming, it could be whenever a storm comes that whatever storm god is displeased w/ a few people, and so he sends down lightning to kill the people that StormGod doesn't like and the thunder is a warning to everyone else to behave.

Can anybody????

Translate this into modern english....gah???

Sideline Wench: Since none of my sex 'tis allowed

Within the network booth on high,

'Twill be my one sweet distaff voice

Midst these growling sports-page lowlifes

Which will, upon my sideline nunnery,

Dare confront the pretty Brady.

Two heralds, Kornheisercranz and Wilbonstern, wearing hideous matching ESPN doublets, elbow the Sideline Wench aside.

Kornheisercranz: Upon this line-ed greensward set within

A desert the Almighty fixed but for cactus

Will be this, our strange stage for Sabbath's pigskin war,

Waged by mesomorphs come from green Blue States afar.

Wilbonstern: 'Tis stranger still the warrior names affixed,

For they would better be the one, the other.

Think on it: those called Giants are but dwarfs here,

Mere ciphers in the point spread, a goodly dozen down.

Kornheisercranz: Yea, the true giants, these peerless monsters,

Call themselves Patriots, e'en though they give shame

To that sweet address, trafficking more as traitors,

Scoundrels in video deceit, cashing all manner of Belichicks.

Sideline Wench: But, hush all you scribes who bloviate so,

For comes now fair Brady, he who is as super

In his mortal company as e're this game is to sport.

But soft! Let me look upon him as if I filled his embrace.

Oh! A visage that Narcissus would have traded for!

And a manner that knows neither pressure nor fear.

But, alas, 'tis women of fashion that he favors,

For one already has his babe, another his flowers,

And I, only a sideline wench who can but model dreams.

And now Brady enters amid a crowd of admirers. Small children toss rose petals in his path.

Kornheisercranz: Methinks the crunch upon his presence is so great,

And the paparazzi do shine forth such a spangled glare

That the great golden orb above must be dimmed

And the sounds of Niagara itself seem noiseless

Before the din of questions that confront our great Brady.

The Media: Brady, Brady what is afoot with thou?

Brady: Good men of the press box, I come whole to you,

For always the feats I have achieved, were upon my two feet.

And Sunday, I shall play the same no less,

One game at a time, one good foot before the other.

But now, I bid you, let me take my leave to join my mates,

For by rolling alone, there is no way for Moss to gather passes.

Narrator (in hushed tones): And so Brady exits stage left ... and the heralds return.

Wilbonstern:: But look now, who approaches from yon other way?

'Tis young Eli, who seems, in his manner, yet a boy,

No match for such a paragon as the dauntless Brady.

Kornheisercranz: 'Tis so, he is yet more Manning than man,

But the football blood that fills that callow vessel

Is as royal as Brady ever bought to his captured throne.

Eli is the seed of the sainted Archie

And thus branch from the same tree as Peyton,

He, who made stallions of Colts but twelvemonth past.

Mayhap the lad can, with a pigskin, find the same mark

Little David did when bookies of yore favored huge Goliath.

Sideline Wench: So, withal, is the grandeur of Brady match for the legacy of Eli?

Forsooth,

With that I take to silence and send it back up to the big boys in the booth.

Can anybody????
Wow... I'll give it my best shot.

Sideline Reporter (female): Since women aren't allowed in the press booth, me and my lovely voice will be stuck down here with the rough people who, when they hear my innocent talking, go out and take on Tom Brady.

Two reporters, Kornheiser and Wilbon, wearing hideous matching ESPN gear, come on camera.

Kornheiser: The green within the desert, where the only green is the cactus, is our strange venue for Sunday's Super Bowl, fought by well-muscled men from the other side of the country.

Wilbon: Actually, their names are kind of strange. Each team's nickname is more fitting for the other team. Think about it: the Giants are coming in as the underdogs, down a dozen points in the point spread.

Kornheiser: True, and the real giants, the ones making history, call themselves Patriots. Which is ironic, considering the Spygate incident with Bill Belichick earlier this year.

Do you get the idea now? It's two football anchors, Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser, reporting about the Super Bowl. And very poetic, too. This is one time when ROFL is called for!
Reply:Do your own homework. No one wants to go through this whole long thing for you. It's not that hard -- here's how you do it:

Any time you see t in front of a normal word, like 'tis or 'twill, make it into it ___, like it is or it will. Look up the words/phrases you don't know, like "callow vessel." Just type it into Google, and you're sure to get something. As for the rest... if you see an archaic word that you know, like "fair" or "visage," change it into a modern equivilant, like "pretty" or "image." And make everything sound less formal. That's all you have to do.

Help with my baby fox!?

i am 17 years old... i know i shouldnt have but about 2 months ago i found a baby fox on my way home from school and her leg looked hurt. she limped on it... i gave her some painkillers that we had from my dog ((that passed away)) and surprisingly she let me put an ace bandage on it. i made a bed for her and let her use my dogs old water dish and feed her milk through a bottle i bought especially for her :) . Her name is Narcissus ((cause she loves looking in my mirror)) she seems happy and loves my big closet but she is getting too comfortable and makes noises to communicate with me so it is obviously time to tell my mom how should i tell her??? I love her like a baby because i have nursed her back to health and am terrified that my mom'll get rid of her... what should i do???

Help with my baby fox!?
What you have done is illegal and dangerous. If the fox bit someone, even a tiny little nip, it could be taken away from you and destroyed, because it is a wild animal.

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact....

These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep wild animals until they are healthy enough to be returned to the wild.

Do NOT just let the fox go - it will not survive in the wild. It needs to be rehabilitated and trained to find its own food and to fear humans again. If this animal were to be let loose and it ran up to a human, that person might hurt or kill the animal, thinking it was going to attack, or that it was rabid.

I understand why you did what you did. For some of us, it is all but impossible to see an animal that needs help, and not try to give it the help it needs. But you are not trained or licensed to do this with wild animals.

If you are interested in doing this - legally - take a look at these two websites:

http://www.owra.org/becoming.htm

http://www.ewildagain.org/pdf/RecBooklet...

After reading the information on these two websites, if you are interested in becoming a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, contact some rehabbers near you and see if they would allow you to volunteer at their place, to learn and get experience so you can eventually apply for your own rehabber's license.
Reply:Zoos will NOT take a fox that's been tamed.

A wildlife rehabber can raise the fox properly and let it loose in a good natural area for you. You can find one that's close to you by calling around to the vet clinics and asking, or calling the animal shelters. Usually there's a few people in the area that are licensed.

IF your state has rules allowing the public to have wildlife, you'll need to get a license from them saying its ok. The phone book will have the number of the state's DNR, Department of Natural Resources. They're the ones that do the licensing.

The longer the fox is around people the harder it will be to gether back into the wild. Don't wait. I'd call the wildlife rehab person first.

I typed in 'wisconsin wildlife rehabber' and it came up with a ton of stuff, including the name of people by county. Try doing a google.com search with your state's name first. Then email them or call by phone.
Reply:A tame fox is something you have for life, she's lost her fear of man...In other words you turn her loose and she'll run up to the next hunter or game keeper, and I need not spell out the results of that surely.....So bottom line I'd be telling Mater that you have a tame fox and work it out from there.
Reply:if you really have done what you have said then you basically have signed a death sentence for this animal.

not only is it illegal, its a rabies vector specie. you cant realease it into the wild because its too used to humans, if you release it to the state they will put it down if it cant find a facility like a zoo or a museum to place it in, then again it may have rabies so...yea they will kill it

GREAT JOB!
Reply:ok tell ur mom or if u can drive take it to a zoo where (you already got it accustomed to having humans around) it can live out the remainder of her life. the smart idea would have been to take her to a wild life rehabilitaiton center and let them nurse her back to health. there is no way u can keep her legaly and she cant go back to the wild she is already tame.
Reply:Hi there. You need to tell your mom, and then you need to contact wildlife services. A fox is a wild animal, and although it's cute now, it will grow and take on adult behaviours. If it is still young there's a good chance it can still survive in the wild, but the longer you keep it the less chance there is. It needs to learn to catch it's food and other fox behaviours. It was very kind of you to take it in but now you need to do the next kind thing for the fox and call wildlife officials. You'll be harming it more than helping it if you keep it any longer.

Reply:if you get the fox vaccinated you should be ablte to legally keep it. how have you hid it so your mom cant find her? tell your mom that you are almost an adult and need to make decisions on your own and that you will care for the baby becasue you love her and that she should take your love away. if done in a manture way she should let you keep the baby unless she is a very stubborn parent
Reply:been all that time and u hadent told ur mum lol..and i think its illegal or something but id keep it anyway

How do narcissists act like and how do you determine someone is a narcissist?

I went to Wikipedia and I loved the old story with Narcissus.

Then I remember reading a comedy book about some freak who kept saying "I'm a beautiful Narcissist". I searched the word and it said "One who is in love with thyself"

Also, can you tell me why there are narcissists? Where did they originate from? Did they just have an obsession with themselves or was it from parents or relatives? And, are there people who want to be with Narcissists?

Thanks.

How do narcissists act like and how do you determine someone is a narcissist?
"People with Narcissistic Personality Disorder have a lifelong pattern of grandiosity (in behavior and in fantasy), thirst for admiration, and lack of empathy,. These attitudes permeate most aspects of their lives. They feel that they are unusually special; the are self-important individuals who commonly exaggerate their accomplishments to make themselves seem bigger than life.

Despite their grandiose attitudes, narcissistic individuals have fragile self-esteem and often feel unworthy; even at times of great personal success, they may feel fraudulent or undeserving. They remain overly sensitive to what others think about them, and feel compelled to extract compliments. When criticized, they may cover their distress with a facade of icy indifference. As sensitive as they are about their own feelings, they have little apparent understanding of the feelings and needs of others and may feign empathy, just as they may lie to cover their own faults.

Narcissistic people often fantasize about wild success and envy those who have achieved it. They may choose friends they think can help them get what they want. Their job performance can suffer (due to interpersonal problems) or can be enhanced (due to their external drive for success). Because they tend to be concened with gooming and value their youthful looks, they may become increasingly depressed as they age.

This disorder has been very poorly studied. It is probably uncommon; reportedly, most patients are men..."
Reply:its somebody who is IN LOVE with themselves

its from the greek god whos name was narcissist and he loved hemslelf a LOT
Reply:Narcissists are in love with themselves. They will spend all of their time looking in the mirror, primping and preening.
Reply:This is my definition: They think they are the best--better than everyone else--best looking, talented, best personality, more intelligent, can do everything better than everyone else, is never wrong. They can do no wrong, and any problems are somebody else's fault.
Reply:narcissists are self absorbed. for their perspective the world revolves around them
Reply:Narcissists have to know what they look like all the time, love being told their beautiful, and love looking at themselves in a mirror. If all the above is true...you've got Narcissus.

And supposedly that's where the saying came from is the story of narcissus...
Reply:narcissists are concieted people. it originates from the greek myth of narcissus
Reply:There's an issue here, I think, with how the public uses the term and how clinical psychologists would use the term, kind of like the terms "paranoid," or "depressed."

The general public might describe someone who is very egotistical, showy, flamboyant, or prone to a lot of boasting as "narcissistic," or a narcissist. Most of these people aren't mentally ill; just very egotistical.

True narcissistic personality disorder is an actual disease or disorder. These tend to be individuals with little or no ability to empathize with others, with severe competitive streaks, workaholism, grandiosity, mood swings, and other personality traits that impair their ability to function; their personalities may be so abrasive that they have difficulty maintaining relationships, forming intimacy, relating to other people, etc.

They are also often high acheivers and relentless perfectionists - the stereotypical "nightmare boss." (They often are less effective as bosses than more charismatic or empathetic managers because people tend to avoid them - they can be very unpleasant.)

Their personality traits are in fact disabling; narcissistic personality disorder impairs their ability to function on a daily basis. They may end up with severe legal, marital, or financial trouble because of their disorder.

The public, non-clinical use of the term refers to someone who has a lot of self-regard (they like themselves more than they should, or believe themselves to be sexually irresistible, highly intelligent, etc), but they're not necessarily mentally ill - just conceited.

She now has a nice home with a hades permanent address.

Greek god project help?

So I decided that I am going to make a sleeping pill becasue Narcissus made people faint... But I have absolutely no clue what to call it. My friend wants me to call it "Narcissus Night-Night Pills" but I really don't think that that is A+ material. Any suggestions?

If you want to do sleeping pills go with Hypnos, the god of sleep. That will make your teacher really see that you know what you are talking about.

The Matrix?

Briefly describe the story of Narcissus. What are the similarities between Neo and Narcissus?

Please Help Me- Thanks! : )

The Matrix?
Narcissus sees his own reflection and falls in love only he doesn't know it's him in the reflection. He falls into the underworld and is redeemed from his narcissism (super para phased) The similarities are that Neo is unaware of who he is and does need to go into the underworld (Zion) in order to be freed from the matrix. This is an overly simplistic answer but i hope it helps!

Narcissus autem potestatem amoris non fugitavit. Olim in undis fluminis se, iuvenem formosissimum, vidit et imaginem sui amavit. *** imaginem tangere temptavit, imago fugitavit. Denique pervidit se imaginem esse. Lacrimis aquas fontis turbavit. Imago iterum fugitavit; amor corpus iuvenis devoravit; neque vigor, neque color, neque forma mansit.

"Vale," dixit Narcissus, et in ripa fluminis iacuit. "Vale."

"Vale," resonavit Echo.

Sorores Narcissi corpus iuvenis quem amaverant humare paraverunt.

Latin to English Translator.......?
Even today this voice lingers. If you wander about the mountains and the caves and you shout, "Echo, Echo," Echo will repeat (resound) your words.

Narcissus, however, did not escape the power of love. One time, in the waves of a river he saw himself, handsome and young, and loved (fell in love with) his own reflection. When he tried to touch his reflection, the reflection ran away. Finally, he understood (perceived) that he was the reflection. He stirred up (disturbed, troubled) the water with his tears. Again the reflection disappeared; love consumed (devoured) the body of the young man; neither strength, nor color, nor shape remained.

"Goodbye," said Narcissus, and at the banks of the river he laid down. "Goodbye."

"Goodbye," repeated Echo.

The sisters of Narcissus prepared to bury the body of the young man they loved.

But in the place of his body remained only a flower - a flower with white leaves called Narcissus.

I do hope you're learning something instead of just "passing it on" :)

Don't you think that Beachbum MUST give back her winning in the internet bubble lottery?

I mean, she claims to be a PROUD leftist, concerned about the well being of others, that what makes America great is our social programs.

Here's her question (she's quite the Narcissus, this beach bum):

Don't you think that Beachbum MUST give back her winning in the internet bubble lottery?
I wonder what part of liberal you do not understand. I understand that conservatives means, me, myself, and I. Their 3 favorite persons. If you put all the conservatives in a barrel and decided its worth to the country it sure wouldn't come up the the $70 that we are paying for their oil.
Reply:Hey dip, what is a bubble lottery?

And Narcissist is actually more apt than Narcissus because of the gender inconsistency.

Next time get a real education instead of taking corresopondence courses.
Reply:No I do not think she owes you anything.

She is willing to give part of her earnings to help others? Are you?
Reply:CALM down, junior.

Relax..take a trip to the beach and ask yourself " Why do I get all bunged-up so easily, what do I mean by a bubble lottery, and why am I such a dip?"

Are you secretly in love with BeachBum?

Aww, how cute!

And Narcissist is correct if you are referring to someone's vanity, kid. Guess you flunked Psyche 101...
Reply:She is obviously more educated than you are.

The word is Narcissist, not Narcissus. It describes someone who is vain and extraordinarily egotistical.

Nothing in her question alludes to extraordinary vanity as far as I can tell.

Help with character name?

The character is male, in the age range of 17-22 (His exact age makes little to no impact on the story or his personality) He is one of only two characters in a play I'm writing. Basically, he's the good guy.

The other character is a female whom I've named "Echo" because she is completely vapid. (Not named after the Echo of Echo and Narcissus, but rather because she is as substance-less and superficial as an echo.) I'm going to have to explain this broadly, because it's highly conceptual, but bare with me- Echo has brought upon herself a great punishment through her own vanity and selfishness. This is the greatest punishment there could be, and it fits the crime. She is given the option to have someone else share her punishment (without their consent) because having another person with her will make her punishment more bareable- but for the person she chooses, it's pretty much like being given the worst punishment there is for no reason what so ever.

Echo's Lament for Narcissus

Tribute to Ben Johnson

O lost chances. O bitter choices made,

When the joy of love finds no expression,

And Narcissus weeps in the velvet shade

At cruel fate; self-love and barren passion.

He now never will know a maiden's love.

My heart weeps for Narcissus in his plight.

His beauty, a gift from Heaven above

Now becomes an abhorrence in his sight.

List! The trees shiver and plaintively sway

Can you hear my echoing sighs and pleas?

But playthings of the spiteful Gods we stay

As winds play chase amongst the leaves.

Linked by a caprice, enslaved together.

Narcissus condemned to gaze forever.

And me, poor Echo repeating......ever

.....ever.....ever....ever......ever

O that the Gods our earthly bonds would sever!

(Would 'He never now' be better than 'He now never'?

Can you see the join? Following in the footsteps?

Narcissus erat iuvenis formasus et superbus. Putabat se formosissimum esse. Quamquam multae iuvenem amaverant, tamen Narcissus neminem praeter se amabat.

Ubi nympha Echo Narcissum in silva vidit, statim iuvenem amavit.

Forte solus errat, at Echo iuvenem secreto sequitur. Nox appropinquat et formas obscuras in silva celat.

"Quis adest?" rogat Narcissus. "Quis adest?"

"Adest," repondet Echo.

"Veni," clamat Narcissus magna voce. "Veni!"

"Veni," respondet Echo, et nympha misera iuvenem superbum bracchiis suis tenere temptat.

"Desiste," clamat Narcissus. "Moriar antequam tibi me dedero."

"Tibi me dedero," resonat misera Echo. In pudore se celat-in silvis, in montibus, in speluncis-donec forma minima est. Vox sola manet.

En, alterum! Post hoc spero ut edocta sis de Latina legenda :) Sic esto, in rem:

Narcissus was a handsome and proud young man. He thought [that] he was the most handsome [of all]. Although many young women had loved him (the young man), still, Narcissus loved no one but (other than) himself. When the nymph Echo saw Narcissus in the forest, she immediately fell in love with (loved) him. Echo still had a body and voice, but her voice had changed (was new). Because Echo had tricked Juno*, the queen of the gods, the nymph did not treat Juno with respect**.

One day, Narcissus was hunting (following)*** wild animals in the forest and mountains with the other young men. By chance he wandered off alone, but Echo secretly followed the young man (him). Night approached and concealed (hid) their dark (vague) forms (bodies) in the forest.

"Who's there?" asked Narcissus. "Who's there?"

"Who's there?" answered Echo.

"Come [here]!" cried Narcissus in a loud voice. "Come!"

"Come" answered Echo, and the nymph tried to hold the proud youth with her [own] arms.

"Stop [that]," cried Narcissus. "I would die before I give myself to you."

"I give myself to you," repeated poor Echo. In shame (embarassed) she hid herself in the forest, mountains, and caves until her form (body) diminished (vanished). Only her voice remained.

* Echo Iunoni ... dolo nocuerat = lit. Echo had injured (insulted) Juno with a trick.

** habere, when used with the dative (ie. Iunoni), means to regard, consider, or treat someone, ie. Echo's voice was changed because she disrespected Juno when she tricked her.

*** note that I have translated "sequitur", and all the remaining verbs, as "historic present", ie. present in form but past in meaning. However, if you haven't learnt that yet, you can (and maybe should) change them to present tense.
Reply:I doubt you could find a translator that would do a translation like that, but I can direct you to a very good Latin -%26gt;English and English -%26gt; Latin dictionary.

Greek Mythology?

Ever wondered why in Greek Mythology they portrayed the gods and goddesses of Olympus as whiny, vengeful beings who would rather run you through with a lightning bolt than look at you?

Yet their stories are told in more detail than let's say the story of Echo and Narcissus. This story also did not end well kudos to the ever-bitchy Hera.

Why do we still honor those who aren't the greatest of role models? This is also seen today with our political leaders. Is America taken a more caveman, early-century approach to life?

Or was there just something terribly wrong with the Greeks?

Greek Mythology?
Your question seems a bit confused, so my apologies if I haven't correctly understood it.

There was nothing that I know of that was more wrong with the Greeks than with contemporary people. Perhaps the ancient Greeks may have even had a better appreciation of their needs than we have of ours. It was the Greeks, after all, who gave the world some of its earliest and most poetic literature, plus the invention of geometry, formal logic, biology, and other scientific practices, plus democracy, and we admire and use all these to this day. We really owe a great deal to the Greeks.

As for Greek mythology, you are correct that the pantheon was full of very human-like deities. Perhaps the Greeks were merely projecting the normal virtues and vices of humans onto their gods. Just btw, the Hebrew/Jewish "one god" is another interesting example of a persona with rather, shall we say, "colorful" characteristics. He is vindictive, mean-spirited to his own people, jealous of other gods, and not above a little blood-thirsty trickery. So please don't think that the Greeks were alone in inventing their gods to be "all too human." Same goes for the Indian Vedic pantheon.

Most modern people no longer "honor" the Greek gods, but in the West at least, students and scholars find great satisfaction in appreciating how the Greek imagination was formed. The Odyssey especially shows the human failing of hubris balanced against the human virtue of humility. And there are many other insights into ourselves that we can gain by studying the Greek myths.
Reply:Now i live in Canada and LOVE Greek Mythology..i don't think reading about Zeus cheating on his wife and creating a son is the best book to be reading to you children but as a 21 year old i find the stories fun to read..i think the problem with the US and Canada for that matter is people to often blame certain material for screwing up there children but Where are the parents at..i mean kids are allowed to read and play anything these days, while the parents are playing bingo and watching dr.Phil laughing at other dumb people..I think we all need to take responsibility in our kids and our siblings and watch what they read and play..dont ban items that do not harm a fully developed human being. For the greeks i think they were awsome! Who doesnt love a good story
Reply:i dont think we honor them...and the stories are told in detail because the greeks actually recorded their history, so we know alot about them. not like those egyptians.
Reply:Nothing wrong with the Greeks. What passes for truth today will be fiction and perhaps mythology tomorrow--look how fast the Iraq War came undone when the mythology of the WMDs were discovered as a ruse just to invade Iraq. We've dumbed-down politics in order to make everyone happy, don't forget Amerika is the home of warm and fuzzy and happy people, or so the propaganda goes.

Another what did Shakespeare mean question.?

Bondage is hoarse* and may not speak aloud,

Else would I tear the cave where Echo* lies

And make her airy tongue more hoarse than mine

With repition of "My Romeo!"

*Bondage is hoarse: being bound in by my family restricts my speech.

*Echo: In classical mythology, the nymph Echo, unable to win the love of Narcissus, wasted away in a cave until nothing was left of her but her voice.

-Thanks for your help in advance! BYE

Another what did Shakespeare mean question.?
Because of she is a Capulet, Juliet's love for Romeo is forbidden (her family name restricts her speech). So she cannot talk about it with anyone. But if she could, she would never be silent about how much she loved him.
Reply:It sounds like she is saying that she is going to repea "My Romeo" so many times that even Echo (her echo) will become hoarse.

The Matrix- Help!?

Briefly describe the story of Narcissus. What are the similarities between Neo and Narcissus?

****

Please Help Me! I don't have time to watch the movie... I will eventually but I have to write a paper on this (I just got the assignment (I'm Not procrastinating) and I have 3 exams to study for! If anyone has any incite and in depth explanations, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks! : )

The Matrix- Help!?
myth:

In a valley, lived a beautiful nymph named Echo who loved to chatter. However, a sad “spell” fell on her. Echo could only repeat, very faintly, the last few words of the sentence. In the same valley lived a good-looking youth named Narcissus, who was so charming that every maiden who saw him, fell in love with him in less than a second. Narcissus, however, was consumed with his own desires and loved no one else. He rejected all his admirers.

One day, Narcissus, while with his friends, was walking and saw a flower. After stopping to pluck it, he lost sight of his friends. In pursuing them, he walked past the tree Echo was resting. In an instant, Echo fell in love with him. She could not bear to lose sight of him, so she followed him without letting him know. She wanted to speak to him, but because she was under the spell, she could not.

While Narcissus was parting some branches to find his friends he said, “Is anybody here?” “Here!” Echo answered faintly. Narcissus looked around not knowing who the voice belonged to, and said, “Where are you? Come here!” whereupon Echo responded, “Here!” Narcissus couldn’t see anyone, but he knew that there was someone close by, so he continued questioning and calling. Each time Echo answered with his last words. She didn’t dare show herself, but she just couldn’t help answering. After a while, she decided to take the chance. She showed up in front of Narcissus and attempted to embrace him. However, Narcisuss rebuffed Echo and ran into the deepest part of the forest.

Narcissus had broken Echo’s heart by his rude and unkind actions. She was so hurt that she stopped eating and grew very pale and thin and wasted away. One of the maidens prayed to the gods and goddesses that he was to only love himself and no one else. Nemesis, who was a goddess of punishment, answered her prayer.

One day, when Narcissus became thirsty, he went to a pool to take a drink. Just before he was about to take a sip from the pool, he saw the reflection of his own face, but he didn’t know it was only a reflection. He couldn’t tear himself away from the appearance in the water. And like Echo, he stopped eating and became really pale and thin and also wasted away. After he died, his body “turned” into a flower that was named after him, Narcissus

copied from wiki but is right cause i learned it in school

i don't know how neo relates though... he wasn't very vain... he was more of a jesus

I need YOUR opinion?

what do you think if this:http://www.fotos.org/galeria/data/520/3S...

I need your oopinion. what do you think of it...what do you see??? make a list and make it intresting!!!

I need YOUR opinion?
The painting shows the Greek god Narcissus! Sitting in a pool, gazing down. Not far away there is a decaying stone figure which corresponds closely to him but is perceived quite differently as a hand holding up a bulb or egg from which a narcissus is growing. In the background, a group of naked figures can be seen, while a third narcissus like figure appears on the horizon

Why do women assume?

that because i am into body building that i am a narcissus?

i mean i like the way i look but i do not spend endless hours looking at myself. as a matter of fact the only time i am looking in a mirror is to shave.

Why do women assume?
Probably jealousy, first for how good you look (which may make them look bad in comparison), and second for you having the discipline to stick to the schedule - which takes time away from them. Or you could simply be a bit too proud. :) Wish I had your discipline.
Reply:Dont you assume all women think that way..
Reply:I don't think they assume... It's just that many women are not into men all prettied up like you.
Reply:I agree - it's more likely you are making up for a small penis.
Reply:It isn't a good idea to assume anything about anyone. Better to find out who they are as a person, than just look at the outside part (body) and think you "get" them.
Reply:you tell it like it is!!
Reply:lol. Can't stop laughing at what the Doctor steve guy said
Reply:I've never thought that. Maybe you need to hang around other women. It is narcissistic to ask this question about why women assume things about you, though.
Reply:Women should NOT assume that, but the sorry fact is that it's true more often than it is false. That means you get lumped into the category with all the rest. It's like any other stereotype.

Don't worry about it. Prove them wrong, that's all.
Reply:Then stop writing about your self... no body cares. or do they? dont think so .

This is from greek mythology.?

Who was Echo? Where did she come form? What was her curse or something like that.

Who was Narcissus? Where did he come from? Who was his mother? What was his Curse like Echo?

THE ANSWER HAS TO BE AT LEAST 5-9 LINES

:D

This is from greek mythology.?
I believe Echo was a nymph who was fond of talking and always wanted the last word. When Hera (queen of heaven and wife of Zeus) came down from Olympus one day looking for Zeus (whom she believed was amusing himself with some nymphs), Echo distracted her with incessant conversation. When Hera found out that Echo had tricked her so Zeus could make a getaway, Hera cursed Echo and caused her to lose the use of speech (which she had been so fond of) and left her only the power of echo...she could only repeat the last thing someone else had said.

She later fell in love with the beautiful youth Narcissus and tried again and again to speak with him, but as expected was only able to echo him. She grew so despondant that she hid in a cave and withered away until all that was left was her voice. That is the "echo" we know today.

On the other hand, Narcissus was so beautiful that he attracted many nymphs. When he had spurned yet another one, she wished that Narcissus might one day know what it unrequited love felt like. A goddess heard this prayer and decided to do something about it. Narcissus stopped at a stream to drink and saw a beautiful image reflected back at him. He tried to speak to the youth, he wouldn't reply. He tried to embrace the youth and the image disappeared, only to return later. Narcissus became enamored of the youth he saw in the stream (his own reflection) and eventually forgot to eat, drink or do anything else. He wasted away and eventually died. The nymphs were heartbroken and when they went to retrieve his body, they found only a white flower with a purple heart that we call today "Narcissus".

By the way, I have heard that Narcissus was either the son of the river god Cephisus and the nymph Liriope or the son of Endymion and Selene (goddess of the moon).
Reply:Narcissus...wasnt he a chap or chappess that could not stop looking at him/ herself in a pool of water and got turned into a flower? Hense the flower with that name is always located next to water? Echo.....wish I knew that one....
Reply:Ever consider doing your OWN research and homework?
Reply:Echo was a wood nymph in love with narcissus,a self-involved greek peasant who loved himself so much he starved to death gazing at his own reflection in a pool.Echo was very chatty and one day when zeus was out womanizing she detained hera by talking to her long enough that zeus got away , as a punishment hera condemned her to only be able to repeat the words of others.Echo died but her voice remains ,forever repeating the words of others.
Reply:You are an ungrateful child.

Do your own research intead of getting others to do it for you. You obviously need this for school, well the assigment was give to YOU so YOU do it. Click on those links and actually learn something.

Here's a shocker, you might enjoy it.
Reply:Give Charlene1 the ten points, spot on answer!
Reply:I agree with the above answer concerning Echo but I was taught in mythology class that Narcissus didn't starve. He gazed at his image so often (or better put) so closely that he fell into the pool

and drowned.

Theseus;

Reply:PRometheus (don't forget the R) - gave fire to man.

Icarus - tried to fly by creating wings stuck together with wax. Went too close to the sun and his son's (Daedelus) wings melted and he died.

Narcissus - fell in love with his own reflection in the water, a water nyph, (echo), fell in love with him when he gazed in the water, and was only able to repeat what he said. He turned in to a flower (the narcissus).

Theseus - can't remember - sorry!
Reply:Prometheus-responsible for stealing fire from the gods and giving it to mankind, therefore attributing technology to this character

Icarus- Icarus and Daedelus, the two who built wings made of feathers and wax. Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax melted causing them to fall from grace and into the sea. Icarus is the embodied tale of people who get lost in the idea and take it too far ending in disaster (think of mad scientist)

Narcissus- was inlove with his own beauty (ie, the term narcisistic) generally thought to personify those who have over done arrogance. He gazed too long into a pool of water and fell in, drowning. A waternymph tried to come to his aid but was only able to give him life as a flower or something like that, but then all the god tales end with the human escaping the god or magic creature by turning into a plant.

Phaeton- sone of Helios. Something about learning to drive the sun chariot that travelled the sky. Blah blah blah, learning how to drive, killed a few people and destroyed a few things...Zeus killed him to stop the rampage...I think.

Thesseus- the slayer of the minotaur. The only way he passed this challenge of the gods was because the daughter of Minos? gave him a golden ball of string that kept Thesseus from becoming lost in the maze the minotaur dwelled after the beast was slain. He married this heroine and then later left her on a desserted island alone. Mercury swooped in and saved the new bride and she and Mercury/Hermes lived happily ever after.
Reply:This might take awhile, but let me try...

Prometheus - gave fire to man, and in so doing, allowed man to become intelligent (the fire of knowledge or enlightenment, etc.); punished for doing this by being bound to a rock where a bird would show up each day to eat his liver and his liver would grow back each night

Icarus - son of Daedalus; the two of them were stuck on an island, and Deadalus figured out a way to make some wings with wax and feathers; Icarus didn't listen to how his dad told him to fly; he went low over the sea and the water got his wings wet, and then tried to fly closer towards the sun to dry them out; unfortunately, when he got closer to the sun, the heat melted the wax on his wings and icarus plunged to his death

Narcissus - 'beautiful' man who loved to look at his own reflection; bent over a pool of water, saw his reflection, and dove in trying to find himself; the nymph Echo fits in there somewhere, but I can't remember exactly; one of the godesses was sorry he died, and named the Narcissus flower after him

Phaethon - son of Helios, the Sun God, who wanted to drive his father's chariot to prove to his friends that he was the son of a god; Helios finally relents, and he drives his father's horses and sun chariot across the sky; Phaethon flew low over his village to show off to his friends, but the heat incinerated the entire village and turned it into a desert; Phaethon flew too high, making part of the earth cold and covered with snow/ice; he then over-corrected and went too low again, burning Africa and making the people black and creating the deserts in North Africa; Zeus killed him with a lightening bolt to stop the runaway chariot

Theseus - performed six 'labors' of strength, cunning, heroism, and resourcefulness by tricking a bunch of bad people at their own games; traveled to the labrynth and slew the minotaur; he got out of the labrynth by following the string he trailed behind him as he walked; one of his sons hid in the Trojan Horse...
Reply:which one, maybe you could just do some reading?
