What was he thinking when he wrote this?

There is a line in William Wordsworth's 'Daffodils' poem which reads thus:

...

A poet could not but be gay

...

By the way, the daffodil belongs to the genus 'Narcissus.'

Why is this flower associated with homosexuality?

Narcissus, is also referred to for anyone who is in love with themselves. So Wordsworth is stating he's is gay, and he's ignorant for assuming a poet can only be gay......hold the phones, he could be referring to happiness, well I know alot of sad poet.....WTF is your point here, that your gay so you must be a poet, I think not. anyone who can rhime or take the time, to make eligance of their thoughts could be a poet.
Reply:this was written nearly 200 years ago, at that time gay meant happy, lively or jolly. Who couldn't be happy in the company of 10,000 daffodils.

Narcissus was a Greek who fell in love with his own reflection, hence with a person of the same sex
Reply:it has to do w old greek legends . see the judy grahn book .
Reply:Why are you so concerned about the words of a dead man? You need to make things easier on yourself and find some living poets and people to care about. Or else, you're going to end up some loser on Yahoo Answers with no friends or life outside of trying to earn points
