Narcicuss and Echo?

I have to compare/ contrast Narcicuss and Echo so..what are some similarities and differences between them? I think they both have an unrequited love (echo narcissus and Narciccus himself) and both ended up dying for love.. thats all i have so far.. so help. thanks

Narcicuss and Echo?
Narcissus

A beautiful young man who fell hopelessly in love with his image in a pond as a punishment from the goddess Nemesis for rejecting the nymph Echo. Narcissus faded away as he sat there watching himself, and was turned into the flower of the same name.

Another version tells us that he killed himself when he realised that touching his image only blurred it.

Echo

Oread (mountain nymph) who lived at Mount Parnassus and by accident caught Zeus with another nymph. When asked by Hera if she had seen him, Echo was too afraid to betray Zeus, and lied, saying she had not. When Hera realized the nymph had lied to her, she cursed Echo by making her capable only to repeat what others said.

Pan loved Echo, but in vain. The nymph fell desperately in love with Narcissus who only loved himself, and her distress made her wither away, leaving only her voice.
Reply:Your idea about unrequitted love seems to fit well. Have you tried breaking that down further?

The story is about Narcicuss, singularly I belive. Echo ditches Pan in her quest for love, and Narcicuss himself gets captivated by simply looking in a mirror. So, in addition to Unrequited love, could this also be obsession? Absorption?

Echo and Narcicuss are similar in the way that they are both doomed to a never ending loop- Narcicuss and his reflection must stare at eachother untill the end of time. Echo is stuck repeating what is said to her. So in a way, both are Trapped.

A difference is this, Narcicuss if focussed wholy on himself, while Echo is forced to focus on others.

I hope this gave you some food for thought.

It's the second story - you have to scroll down.

Always my favorite story, actually.
